Call For Papers

Introduction
The problems of language and the ways to communicate messages orally, audio-visually and in written have been crucial in our professional lives. However, we only know very minimal how the process of meaning-making through language (verbal and non verbal) takes place; what cognitive considerations occur in the process of constructing texts and messages and the preferred ways to communicate them, what specific emotional impacts are constructed in the mind of the audience in order to achieve the communication goals, and how language and communication can ensure the expected results.

By considering different challenges and opportunities on the use of language and communication in the work place, The Department of English, Faculty of Letters and Arts, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta and other supporting organizers are motivated to conduct An International Conference on the Use of Language to Communicate in Different Professions with the grand theme of 'Language and Communication in the Work Place'.

The Conference

This international conference aims at setting up a forum of dialogue among researchers, lecturers, practitioners, and policy makers from different professions (education, media & communication, law, politics, business, tourism, arts and humanities, medical, translation/interpreting, and publishing companies) on the use of language to communicate messages to their audience, their crucial functions and challenges.

We invite research-informed papers of any theoretical and methodological orientation on any aspect of language use and communication related to the aims above. Papers discussing problems of any languages are written in English.  Accordingly, papers might address topics as follows:

  • The roles and functions of language in different professional settings.
  • Language use and its contributions to internal and external communications.
  • Language and communication: implications to different disciplinary cultures.
  • Language and meaning-making in diverse working places.
  • The issues of gender and power in professional settings.
  • Non verbal languages for the process and product of the meaning-making in different professions.
